We can already see the impacts of climate change. Continued warming will exacerbate land degradation, spells of hot, dry weather and intense rainfall. Among other impacts, this will affect crop yields and reduce food security, causing volatile prices. Businesses has a key role to play. That is why our ambition of ZERO carbon footprint aligns with the Paris Agreement’s more ambitious goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 °C.

Devised with the support of external experts at the Carbon Trust, our science-based carbon-reduction targets focus on cutting carbon emissions at our breweries and working with partners across the value chain to reduce ‘beer-in-hand’ emissions by 2030.

  • ZERO carbon emissions at our breweries
  • 30% reduction in beer-in-hand carbon footprint
  • 50% reduction in carbon emissions at our breweries
  • 100% electricity from renewable sources at our breweries
  • ZERO coal at our breweries
  • 15% reduction in beer-in-hand carbon footprint
  • 100% low climate impact cooling
  • 30 partnerships to reduce shared carbon footprint

Our approach towards ZERO

We’re making solid progress towards our targets. By the end of 2019, we had cut relative carbon emissions at our breweries by 30% compared to our 2015 baseline. What's more, 56% of our total electricity consumption came from renewable sources in 2019. We are working towards world-class efficiency, through innovating our existing processes and implementing large-scale investment projects. And we are forming both global and local partnerships focused on sharing knowledge and expertise to cut emissions across our value chain.

Our baseline carbon footprint

The beer-in-hand carbon targets set out in Together Towards ZERO are the result of an in-depth analysis of the carbon footprint of our operations and value chain. See the graphic below.

The next analysis is due in 2020.

Supporting global goals

With our ZERO carbon footprint ambition, we contribute specifically to two SDGs and several of the targets that underpin them. By increasing the share of renewable energy and improving our energy efficiency, we contribute to SDG 7: Affordable and clean energy. Specifically we contribute to 7.2 and 7.3 for renewable energy and doubling energy efficiency.

By setting tough, science-based targets, aligned with the Paris Agreement's more ambitious goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C, we support SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. Specifically, targets 13.1 and 13.3 for strengthening resilience and improving awareness.

Partnering Towards ZERO

Rethinking packaging with the Green Fibre Bottle

Packaging forms a large part of Carlsberg’s carbon footprint so we are working across our portfolio to develop sustainable alternatives. Looking towards the future, in partnership with Paboco®, we unveiled prototypes for the Green Fibre Bottle during 2019 – the latest step towards the world’s first 100% bio-based and recyclable paper beer bottle.
