Together Towards ZERO

Together Towards ZERO is our ambitious sustainability programme, expressing our vision for a better tomorrow at a time of serious challenges such as climate change, water scarcity and public health concerns. It consists of four ambitions: ZERO carbon footprint, ZERO water waste, ZERO irresponsible drinking and a ZERO accidents culture. Each of these is underpinned by individual and measurable targets, leading up to 2022 and 2030.

Partnering Towards ZERO

"'Together’ is a critical word. The success of our business is bound up with our partners, our consumers and the natural world on which we all depend. Nobody can solve the challenges the world faces alone. By working in partnerships, we are able to make faster progress and deliver change which would otherwise not be possible. A belief in the power of partnerships is deeply rooted in our business – stemming from our founder’s belief that bringing together bright minds is the most effective way to better our business and society."

Rethinking packaging with the Green Fibre Bottle

Rethinking packaging with the Green Fibre Bottle

Reducing our beer-in-hand carbon footprint means innovating across our packaging portfolio. And innovations are best achieved in partnership with other experts. The paper bottle company, Paboco, is helping us achieve breakthroughs in our Green Fibre Bottle project, developing the world’s first 100% bio-based beer bottle made from sustainably sourced wood fibres.

Halving water usage at Fredericia brewery

Developing a sustainable tomorrow can only happen together. In 2019 we announced an ambitious project at our Fredericia brewery, the result of public-private partnership with DRIP in Denmark. It will use innovative water recycling technology to reuse 90% of process water, providing learnings for our other wastewater treatments around the world.

Alcohol-free beer on tap

Alcohol-free beer on tap

When people go out, they want to enjoy a great beer with friends but sometimes they don’t want to feel the effect of alcohol, especially when they’re driving. At Carlsberg we’re working with partners to ensure that wherever consumers find our beers they can choose alcohol-free brews – even on tap.

Our ambitions and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a call for governments, civil society, businesses and the general public to act to end poverty, fight inequality and tackle climate change.

Being interconnected, all the goals are important, but we focus our efforts on those where we can have the most impact. Based on our 2016 materiality assessment, we identified the 14 most relevant targets in 7 SDGs - 3, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13 and 17.

3.5 Strengthen the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, including harmful use of alcohol.

3.6 By 2020, halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents.

6.4 By 2030, substantially increase water-use efficiency and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of fresh water to address water scarcity.

6.5 By 2030, implement integrated water resources management at all levels.

7.2 By 2030, increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

7.3 By 2030, double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency.

8.8 Protect labour rights and promote safe and secure working environments for all workers.

12.2 By 2030, achieve the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources.

12.5 By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse.

12.6 Encourage companies, especially large and transnational companies, to adopt sustainable practices and to integrate sustainability information into their reporting cycle.

12.9 Support developing countries to strengthen their scientific and technological capacity to move towards more sustainable patterns of consumption and production.

13.1 Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters.

13.3 Improve education, awareness-raising and capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning.

17.16 Enhance the global partnership for sustainable development, complemented by multi-stakeholder partnerships.

17.17 Encourage and promote effective public, public-private and civil society partnerships.

Carlsberg Young Scientists Community

Our Young Scientists Community, a group of post-doctoral researchers, is tasked specifically with developing and scouting for technologies to help us meet the carbon and water targets in Together Towards ZERO. In 2019, it explored solutions for cutting water waste from cleaning in breweries and up-cycling wastewater, as well as opportunities for balancing and reducing energy requirements throughout the brewery.
